The tragic killing of Nathan Thomas Burney by Kinston police has left our community in shock, anger, and deep frustration. The Kinston Police Department, already notorious for its lack of transparency, has once again failed the people it claims to serve. Despite promises of an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, the department has released no meaningful updates, no findings, and—most outrageously—no answers.
It is alleged that the two officers involved are Captain Andrew Willis and Corporal James Mc Dewitt. Yet, the department has never officially confirmed this, nor have they provided any information about who fired their weapon, how many times Thomas was shot, or any other critical details. Instead, we are met with complete silence. This is unacceptable and only deepens the community’s distrust.
What’s even more infuriating is the department’s double standard. When they believe they are in the right, they are quick to publish every detail and pat themselves on the back. But when the community demands real answers and accountability, suddenly, the silence is deafening. This is not just disrespectful—it’s a blatant disregard for the people of Kinston.
We need transparency from our police department, not just when it’s convenient for them, but especially when things go wrong. Owning up to mistakes and being open with the public is how trust is built. Even when the department is in the wrong, being honest and transparent can actually earn them more respect from the community. It’s the only way to break down the “us versus them” mentality that has taken root in Kinston.
And as we approach this election, keep in mind that the current officials have never held the police accountable for their many questionable acts. We need leaders who will stand up for the people and demand accountability from law enforcement. If you want real change, get out and vote these people out of office. Our voices matter, and together, we can make Kinston stronger, safer, and more just for everyone.
The Kinston Police Department’s lack of communication and transparency is not a minor oversight. It’s a pattern of behavior that erodes public trust and shows a shocking lack of basic skills in community relations. We are tired of being ignored. We want answers, we want accountability, and we want respect. The people of Kinston will not be silenced, and we will not stop demanding justice for Thomas and for every member of our community.
