Kinston residents, I know these are challenging times. The current federal government shutdown is affecting families across our city and state—impacting paychecks, food assistance, and essential services. Many are feeling the strain, especially those who work for the government, rely on federal programs, or are still recovering from recent hardships.
What’s Happening?
Many federal workers in North Carolina, including those in Kinston, are not receiving paychecks during the shutdown.
Programs like SNAP (food stamps) and WIC are funded for now, but could be affected if the shutdown continues.
Social Security benefits are still being paid, but new applications may be delayed.
State employees and those connected to military bases in our region may face furloughs, though health coverage is currently protected.
What Can We Do?
Stay Informed:
Follow updates from the NC Department of Health and Human Services for the latest on affected programs.
Check local news and the Governor’s Office for updates.
Seek Assistance:
If you need food assistance, continue to use SNAP and WIC benefits while they are available.
For emergency financial help, see my recent blog on hardship grants for NC residents (link to your previous post).
Local food banks and community organizations are here to help—don’t hesitate to reach out.
Support Each Other:
Check in on neighbors, especially seniors and families with children.
Share resources and information with those who may not have internet access.
